The Wonder of Widnes | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This page is dedicated to the Houghtons of Widnes. Of course, there are plenty of Houghtons in Widnes. We are the Anglo-Greek contingent founded in 1945 when Sergeant Thomas Houghton of the Royal Artillery returned home to Widnes with his Hellenic bride, Loukia Kaklamanos, previously serving with the Red Cross in Greece. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Our Greek ancestor:
He was born on the tiny island of Hydra. At the age of 17 he became captain of a commercial ship. During the Napoleonic wars he managed due to his courageous, and slightly piratical, sea operations (once enduring arrest by Lord Nelson for running the British blockade against the French) to accumulate considerable wealth. In the second year of the Greek War Of Independence he was appointed admiral of the Greek fleet. He defeated the Turkish navy near Patra and the Turko-Egyptian navy near Geronda, and on many occasions he was able to provide supplies for Greek cities besieged by the Turks.
